January 1, 2021

It’s another January 1st. But this one feels different to me than any other January 1st. Perhaps, it’s because of a global pandemic that swept us off our feet, and not in a good way, in 2020. Whatever the reason, I’m going to relish in the thought of a brighter future for us all and this is a great start.

This morning, just as the sun hit my bed, I began to read The New York Times’s The Morning Newsletter. I’ve come to appreciate and love The New York Times during these most unprecedented events in our country and world. Today’s newsletter was a Happy New Year greeting along with tips on how to keep resolutions. A few of the suggestions that really clicked for me on how to keep a resolution and make it a habit was “stacking” or “piggybacking” a new habit onto an existing habit or ritual. Lightbulb!

This read led me into a 7-Day Well Challenge, starting this Monday, to show how to build on healthy habits I made during the pandemic. I’m going to give it a shot. Today’s challenge was to make gestures of gratitude — like giving larger tips for delivery workers or appreciative texts to friends — a regular part of your day. So today, I texted an old friend, who has been a really good friend and I love her for it.

If you would like to join the challenge you can sign up for the Well newsletter to receive the next challenge in your inbox.

Happy New Year!

America, Elections, politics, Vote

The California presidential primary election is coming up. If you know me at all or have seen my Twitter feed, you know it is making me nervous. The division with politics these days is unreal and a bit scary. In this political climate I always find myself associating the good and evil with the story of Star Wars.

I am from the beginning of the Star Wars generation – A New Hope.

The Rebel Alliance is about fairness, equality and helping those who can’t help themselves.

The Galactic Empire is about power, uniform and doing what is told of you or you will not survive.

I know where I stand, how about you?

I watched the Oscars last night. Did you? I love the Oscars. I’m a movie buff and I love the escape from our own realities that movies offer us. I can also truly appreciate when an actor makes me believe their character and then can perform a completely different character in another movie, that’s talent. So to watch the award show and the culmination of the year’s movies and all that talent, it’s inspiring. Add the fashion and style that walks the red carpet before the show, and I’m all in!

Last night one speech struck a nerve and truly inspired me within because I keep hearing it over and over in my head, still this morning. It was Hildur Guðnadóttir’s speech after winning best original score for Joker and she said, “To the girls, to the women, to the mothers, to the daughters who hear the music bubbling within, please speak up, we need to hear your voices.” I’m not sure what I’m going to do with that, but I know it struck me and I’d like to think it will inspire some action.

So here’s a post for today’s motivation and I’m hoping it helps with my direction. If not, maybe it will help with yours.

Either way we all need a little Monday Motivation don’t we?

America, Family, Home, politics

As I sit here trying to figure out what to write, I realize it shouldn’t be hard with so much going on in my life. But it’s a lot of little stuff going on, nothing exciting. Then I wonder, who really wants to know what’s going on in my life? My day to day activities are pretty boring. I’m a mom, wife and I work from home as a social media manager. Most of my time is spent catering to others and who wants to read about that?

However, lately I have been captivated by the goings-on of America and have my head buried in politics. Unfortunately, I have never been interested in the political arena, yet these days I am paying attention like never before and from what I’m piecing together, it’s probably a good thing that I’m paying better attention. If I don’t have my face in a book then I’m watching a documentary and if I’m not reading or watching a documentary then I’m online scouring for more information. I think more Americans need to pay better attention. I believe America is in trouble and I’m afraid not enough people believe America is in trouble and that is a scary thought.

Duke 2007 – 2018

I have always wondered how people found the wherewithal to post about saying goodbye to their pets. Where did they come up with the strength to put a post together?

I have now learned how to do it.

We came home on Friday to find our dog, Duke, could not stand up. We scooped him up in a sheet and took him to the vet. After lots of tests, it was found he had cancer and 24 hours later we had to say goodbye.

Duke 2

Duke was our family’s dog, but I was his person. Have you ever been a dog’s person? I had never been a dog’s person until I met Duke. For me, it was an incredible, wonderful, soulful experience. He was the perfect balance of a fierce protector yet playful and harmless with us and anyone who came into our home. Never did someone meet him who didn’t like him. I am heartbroken that he is gone. He was incredible. I will miss him forever.

Although I’m never one to post much about myself – as I moved through the next 48 hours after losing Duke, I felt stuck with social media. How could I keep posting for work, and pictures on Instagram, without sharing this beautiful creature? And who, with his loss, has created a huge gaping hole in our world.

So, back to the question – How do people come up with the strength to post about saying goodbye to their pets? I learned when you are fortunate enough to be graced with the presence of a dog that awesome, you want to share him with the world and you find the strength to post about saying goodbye because he deserves it.

I love you Handsome.
