The The Catrinka Project is a message of hope for employment and education for women and young girls through fashion. This project was started by three friends in New York City – Megan, Amisha and Sumana. Their mission is amazing – it employs and empowers woman to make handbags with local textile traditions from around the world. Then 50% of the profits go towards educating and removing barriers between girls and education, which is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty. To share this message the below canvas tote will go to a lucky winner and these beautiful women picked a perfect day to do it – Mother’s Day.

The tote above was made for Girl Rising, a girl’s education documentary film and the purpose of this film was to hopefully ignite support to all young girls around the world in their education. The text on the bag says “The Girl From [City] Can Change The World”, this is a reference to each city from each of the girls in the film in each of their native languages (Gujarati, Amharic, Krio, Khmer, French Creole, Spanish, Arabic, etc.) and the bag is stamped with the image of one of those girls with a block print texture.

Why Didn’t I Think of That?

Hot Iron Holster

Hot Iron Holster Original-Box

This is brilliant!

When I came across this it grabbed me. It is SO clever. I love it.

I think I immediately loved it so much because I knew it was from a mom due to the fact that I picked up the link through a mom entrepreneur site. However, when I researched the website I liked it more and more. Here’s why – What REALLY grabs me is the process of HOW she came up with the idea and I cannot get enough of these stories! It pulls out the dreamer in me and I start wondering if maybe one day one of my little ideas will take off.

I have found, as many of you have, that being a mom makes me short on time for ME. Considering that I lived a life when it was just me and my cat, I am used to lots of time for ME. But when I got married, bought a house, had a child and a big dog, the time for ME – not so much. When this happens time slips through your fingers like sand. So you have to get creative.

I never thought I was all that creative until I became domesticated. With so much to do I am always thinking of how to make it easier, quicker and efficient. Whatever “IT” is, I just want it to be simple. Not complicated. When things are complicated it is almost always a recipe for disaster. So when I come across minds like the mom who made this Hot Iron Holster, she’s like my new idol for the day. She had to think of something to make it easier, simpler and not complicated and in the process she is empowering herself, her family and making money.

She gives me hope.

Why Didn’t I Think of That?

Spanx

Spanx

I did think of this.

When I worked corporate I used to cut the feet off tights because tights offer more support. I also learned that when you cut them just above the ankle or right below the knee they don’t ride up as much than if you cut them mid-calf or mid-thigh – like bicycle shorts. Raise your hand if you tried these under your dress too! Unfortunately, I kept quiet about my little idea because it’s all about the illusion, right? If I had told someone then they would know I wasn’t as smooth as it appeared and my cover would be blown.

One day a co-worker came over after work and after some wine we carried on into the evening talking. At some point during our chatfest she wanted to make herself more comfortable and needed to change. She then told me what she had on and I about fell off the couch. I was so excited I told her I do the same thing.

It was probably during that conversation that Sara Blakely, Founder of Spanx, was taking the buyer from Neiman Marcus into the bathroom to show her exactly what we were talking about on the couch in my living room.

C’est la vie.

I’d like to think that one day I will have my “Spanx” moment. Maybe one of my little ideas, of the many I have collected in my notebook over the years, will actually be something I feel strongly enough to make happen. Until then… I will follow, watch, listen and learn from all those who have come before me and hopefully one day something clicks.
